Association Jeanne Jugan

Association Jeanne Jugan members participate in the apostolic mission confided by the Church to the Little Sisters of the Poor – that of hospitality to the aged poor.

Each member offers the type of commitment to which he or she feels called, according to his or her abilities, interests and family or professional obligations.

Devoted to helping the Little Sisters in their mission of care to the elderly, Association Jenne Jugan members lend a hand or an ear to Residents in need of company, help in the dining room as needed and host activities or socials for Residents.

Members with singing talent have even been known to entertain Residents with musical presentations.

The Association Jeanne Jugan is open to Catholic men and women of at least 18 years of age who wish to give greater vitality to their Christian faith and to participate in the apostolic mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Following an introductory period and a time of initial formation, membership in Association Jeanne Jugan is sealed by an annual promise.

There are almost 2,000 Association Jeanne Jugan members worldwide. St. Anne’s Home presently has 24 associates.

Please contact Sr. Rose Marie at 415-751-6510 for more information about membership.

Little Sisters of the Poor Saint Anne’s Auxiliary

As Auxiliary members, we count it a privilege to stand beside the Little Sisters of the Poor of St. Anne’s Home, San Francisco, in support of their benevolent work.

Our Purpose: We are guardians of the legacy – a legacy of loving, quality care for the elderly of limited resources begun by St. Jeanne Jugan in 1839.

How We Began: We were founded in 1981 by 20 women who had the foresight to know the strong support that an Auxiliary could lend to the Little Sisters as they live out the call on their lives. They wrote bylaws, presented a slate of officers from their group and the remaining women formed the first Board of Directors.

Who We Are: We are currently a group of over 550 dedicated, energetic women of all ages, denominations and abilities, from all parts of the Bay Area. The level of participation varies according to the commitment each member is able to make.

Who Should Join Us: Any woman with a heart for the special needs of the elderly.

How We Function: We are both a service organization and a fundraising arm of St. Anne’s Home.

Service: Service is a rather clinical term that does not express the warm interaction that takes place between Residents and Volunteers. This giving of one’s time may be through the volunteer program of the home in the form of hands-on work such as bed making, driving Residents to appointments and filling other needs that arise.

Additionally, this may be through the activities that the Auxiliary plans (on and off-site) for the Residents. On these occasions, the Residents can enjoy a special luncheon or a tour and we also share the joy of interacting with them for the day.

Resident Gift Program: This program was founded in 1995, by our past president, Maryliz Lincoln. Residents are given a personal gift of their choosing on their birthdays and at Christmas. Gifts are selected by an Auxiliary member, who chairs this committee, and gifts are purchased with funds from the Auxiliary Treasury.

Fundraising: Our fundraising is ongoing throughout the year and includes:

  • Christmas Boutique: This event is held biennially and is a festive two-day event that includes seated luncheons as well as an opportunity to do one-of-a-kind holiday shopping. Featured in this sale, among a variety of quality items, are handcrafted items created by our talented members, who have contributed their skills to this event for many years. These “Craft Ladies” gather each Tuesday to prepare for this beautiful holiday affair.
  • Carriage House (Rummage) Sales: These are held biannually in the spring and fall and are an important source of funds for the work of the Home.

Auxiliary General Meetings: These are held biannually in the Spring and Fall and are part of a special luncheon held for members, friends and Residents. They are usually in the relaxing setting of a golf club or a hotel.

Young Helpers Are Always Welcome

St. Anne’s Home started The Youth for Elders program to engage the youth of our community in learning more about caring for the elderly and learning from their legacy, while appreciating the value of giving. The program encompasses involvement in our mission of care.

Fundraising: Fundraising takes many forms. This year, students from several schools in the Bay Area collected much-needed personal hygiene items for our Residents. Some students have even donated money they have raised from candy sales for the benefit of our Residents.

Volunteerism: Our youth volunteer program is geared to provide companionship to the elderly who benefit from the friendship of a regular visitor.

Volunteers with musical talent often assist in the dining room by entertaining the Residents. Other volunteers help with regularly scheduled activities, such as bingo or craft-making. They also help with folding clothes or in the kitchen or with office duties.

Visits: Children from local schools often visit St. Anne’s Home as a group. They attend Mass in our chapel, pray the rosary with Residents and even entertain the Residents during the noon meal.
